abc 7 starts now with live breaking news. >> that breaking news is from concord this afternoon, several people have been involved in a wreck near highway 4. this is a live look from sky 7 hd. see what a mess that is. the accident has been reported on the port chicago highway off ramp to westbound highway 4. the highway patrol says five people were hurt. injuries all considered to be minor. there's still a lot of damage to the vehicles right there. we're told it's going to take some time to move those wrecked cars from the roadway. one has overturned so traffic is going to be impacted for sure. the circumstances surrounding this crash are not known at this point. we'll bring you updates throughout this newscast and on twitter, of course, 24/7 at abc7 news bay area as soon as we get them. good afternoon, everybody, i'm

larry beil. >> check out the super bowl sign behind us, it's wonderful. super bowl week is finally here. live overlooking super bowl city from the top of our abc 7 broadcast center. >> yes. the weather people have given us permission to be up here. >> for now. all right. we begin with an afternoon scare for the denver broncos today. two buses carrying players were involved in an accident following their practice today at stanford. happened at southbound 101 at ellis street south of moffitt field. the team was heading back to the hotel in santa clara when one bus ran into another and a chp motorcycle officer ran into one of the buses. the officer had minor injuries. the team says no one from the broncos was hurt. outside linebacker demarcus ware tweeted the photo of players standing alongside their bus. he posted "to keep the day interesting, we have a small wreck. looks like everyone is okay, though." >> yeah, more interesting than

they would prefer. >> i think so. >> the super bowl is creating obviously a lot of frenzy of activity all across the bay area. >> abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live where fans are soaking in the experience. >> reporter: super bowl city of course opened this weekend and it was basically two days of celebrations for san francisco residents and bay area residents but the mayors of bay area city today held a news conference welcoming everyone else who's coming. when you think of football, you think of mariachis, right? okay. how about vij yurtual reality? in super bowl city what might seem bizarre anywhere else suddenly seems okay. like headless football players, where you provide a head. they're one of the most photographed attractions here. the fully-armed police s.w.a.t. team members are probably the second most photographed. bay area residents here said today seemed like the most opportune time to take this spectacle in before everyone else gets here.

>> if you're going to come, come during the weekday and to come early, you know, and because more and more people are going to be pouring in from outside the bay area. >> reporter: everyone else is surely coming, some people from outside the bay area are already here like this guy and his family who just flew inaustrali >> it's a 14-hour flight. it's a family holiday as well. we thought we'd pack it in together. >> reporter: if you live or work in san francisco, sure, traffic is a nightmare and, yes, you may have to g through security lines just to get to your b.a.r.t. stop and, okay parking spots in an already tough city to park in might be off limits for a week. but mayor ed lee says this may be the center set for other future host cities. >> i think super bowl 50 has aligned itself with some of the highest standards ever that i think all the other host cities, maybe it will come back because they can't beat those standards. >> reporter: or maybe even a bigger event. during that welcomed news conference with other bay area

mayors, san jose's mayor joked about a bay area olympics. now, the san jose mayor said a formal application for an olympics has not been made but did call this a fire drill, basically training in case the cities do decide to get together and make a pitch for a larger event. in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc 7 news. >> just to give perspective we're approximately a cam newton touchdown pass away from super bowl city where sergio is. a chance to grill the broncos and players and coaches and fans to witness it all from the first row. >> yeah, this is the first time the nfl has moved media day into a primetime event. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has a preview. >> reporter: busy morning at the s.a.p. center before opening night, bomb-sniffing dogs and a lot of law enforcement officers are on watch. the broncos and panthers landed at san jose's airport yesterday. the players will be at the

s.a.p. center tonight for what used to be called media day. moved it from tuesday morning to monday night, made it a primetime event and opened it up to fans. at b2 coffee, a perfect view of the field. north san pedro street is now super with yards and yards of green grass. >> fun to see people who don't necessarily come downtown come and hang out. it's fun. >> it's great. don't have to worry about traffic and it's pretty. >> reporter: in plaza de cesar chavez, a temp area outdoor garden and beer garden. the areas around the convention center, hotels, and the s.a.p. center have certain restricti restrictions. counterfeit products, food sales from food trucks, distribution of free merchandise and use of drones out of the area. o opening night starts at 5:00. unfortunately for fans tickets are already sold out. matt keller, abc 7 news.

pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall. so give yourselves a little extra time if you're a morning commuter. i'll give you a look at what to expect after this and for the super bowl week ahead in just a few minutes. larry, ama? >> all right. thank you so much, spencer. well snow in the high sierra kept 7 00 children from coming ohm as scheduled. they were attending a winter camp near hume lake in fresno county but their charter buses were stranded by 2 feet of snow. this is the photo of those buses. check that out. >> a lot of snow. >> the children are from throughout california including the bay area. they're expected to make it home later tonight. >> and cleanup is under way after last night's winds brought down this massive tree. it came crashing down dangerously close to a home in redwood city. the homeowner who's in a wheelchair had to go in through the back just to get into the house. crews are actually still working to demolish a home on a sliding hillside in san francisco. >> yeah, that home is on casidas avenue near mt. davidson. the city determined the home was dangerous so it had to be

demolished. the question is, are other homes at risk? abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler was at a news conference on this issue and joins us live with the latest. >> reporter: hi, larry, hi, ama. we've been keeping an eye on this situation since last week, ron learned the property he bought and has never lived in is lost. it had to be demolished after the hillside it sits on began shifting. the earth is simply saturated with water. and city crews find an eight-inch water main break which they capped on saturday. it had been spewing a river of water. one neighbor estimates perhaps, you know, millions of gallons of water. he showed us some cell phone video of that big waterspout. but late this afternoon, the head of the department of building inspection and the head of the fspuc said they're not 100% sure that water main break

is the cause. >> we identified the eight-inch water main break, but we're also looking to see if there's ground water because we want to make sure that we secure and make sure we identify all the sources of water so that we can take the next steps. we want to make sure that everything is taken care of. so we're just trying to be very cautious in making sure that we identify all sources. >> reporter: this is sky 7 hd video from last week when five other homeowners, two on either side of the demolished home, and three down below, were told that their homes could be at risk and, again, geotechnical tests to see if their homes are in teenage. we were told late this afternoon that there is no imminent danger. back here live now, tomorrow a well is going to be drilled here to try to pump out some of that water as this investigation

continues. live in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >> carolyn, thank you. well, pg & e says it's lost gas line repair records from 1979 to 1991 for a portion of the bay area. >> "the san francisco chronicle," the admission came during testimony at a california public utilities commission hearing. the missing records constitute a central issue as a judge considers to fine the utility for documentation problems on its network of gas distribution lines. >> abc 7 news was at candlestick point this afternoon as hundreds of uber drivers set off on a protest drive. >> honking their horns along the way apparently. the drivers say wages can be so low they sometimes work for less than $4 an hour. they want to negotiate better wages with uber. sky 7 hd followed the protests as it made its way from san francisco international airport to uber headquarters downtown. >> we saw one of the cars plastered with protest signs.

tieu and nayeri were captured saturday northern after passersby spotted their van and alerted police. the trio was holding a taxi driver captive for part of the time they were in the bay area. they did very little to keep out of sight. investigators say these men arrived at the alameda hotel in san jose tuesday night. the next day, they ate lunch at lee's sandwich shop on east santa clara street. we also learned they had with them a taxi driver they allegedly kidnapped in southern california. and the fate of that faxi drive >> inmate nayeri and duong had a fight in the hotel at the alameda hotel in the city of san jose. the fight was about whether or not to kill the taxicab driver and bury his body. >> according to investigators, duong fled back to southern california with the taxi driver on thursday when the other two inmates went to get the windows

abc 7 news anchor kristen sze. >> caucus, a native american word meaning gathering a tribal leaders. that's what they do. iowans gather to talk about who they want, no voting booths. this mock caucus at drake university was the best tutorial i found. they meet separately in 1,618 precincts. they hear pitches from candidate surrogates. this case, jeb bush sent his son, jeb bush jr. they write down the candidates' name on a piece of paper, the votes are counted attend the winner is named at that caucus site. the democratic side works dichb differently. voters divide themselves into groups standing with others who support the same candidate. if the group is too small, deemed not viable, they have to support a different candidate or recruit others to their camp. this process does take seven hours and begins shortly at 7:00

i wanted to sort of shield myself. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. partly to mostly sunny skies at the moment. here's our next storm brewing right off the north coast off eureka and will be moving into the bay area during the early morning hours. speak of precipitation, let's take a look at snow pack state wide. we're doing quite well so far this season. at 116% of the average or normal amount of snow pack for this time of the year. much better than last year at this time when we were at only 23% of average. statewide tomorrow, we'll see lots of shower activity. and some snow in the sierra. that's mainly the northern 2/3 of the state. way down south it's going to be mainly sunny and mild. here in the bay area tomorrow, we'll have cloudy skies with some morning showers, probably be a wet morning commute tomorrow. little bit on the chilly side with high temperatures tomorrow only in the low to mid 50s. these are our rain chances for the week ahead. we got about a 60% chance of rain. 30% on wednesday. looks like dry weather after that right on through the weekend and through super bowl sunday. larry and ama?

the first ever oxygen therapyi given to her mom and unborn child who had a rare heart defect turns out to be more successful than doctors could have imagined. >> abc 7 news reporter janet o. has a chance to meet her and is live with this incredible story.

>> reporter: boy does he look good. his parents say liam is a very happy baby after spending two months at lucille packard, doctors expect him to do everything his peers would do and lead a normal childhood life. quite a different prognosis from what he, his family was told several months ago. against all odds, baby liam shouldn't be here but he is. >> when we came here, you know, they told us same thing, 10% chance of survival, 90% of mortality rate, but we -- took on the rest of treatment. >> reporter: the treatment ended up being none other than oxygen to help baby liam survive until birth. he was diagnosed with epstein's anomaly, a large heart and leaky valves. >> we have been with other physicians across the world try to address the situation. >> reporter: lynn to was given ox again three weeks, 12 hours a day. mom and son are the first people in the world to be treated with oxygen therapy in this case. >> i would lay there in bed with my oxygen and talk to him and tell him, liam, when you come

out, i need you to breath, okay? i need you to breathe, i need you to fight. >> reporter: the oxygen worked but when liam was born, the battle was far from over. liam had to be hooked up to a machine for ten days before he would have his heart reconstructed. the chances for survival now 50/50. the outcome again is nothing short of remarkable. >> remarkable little boy. >> reporter: liam's dad, jose, say through it all they never gave up hope. >> made a vow to stay strong. >> reporter: it's their faith who got them through and both parents get to enjoy being at home with their son. >> the one thing i look forward to is waking up with him in the middle of the night crying, changing diapers. like, i look forward to those things. >> reporter: at stanford, janet o, abc 7 news. well, the health news, in other health news, the annual physical could be a waste of time and money. here's jane king with today's wellness report. >> reporter: there's a debate brewing over annual physicals and if they are necessary. so far, most medical organizations like the society

of general internal medicine and the american heart association do support regular doctor wellness visits. supporters say it builds relationships and can lead to early detection of health problems. some say there is no proof that annual visits reduce deaths or illnesses and they take up time of doctors who could be seeing sick patients. we know almonds are good for us. they're getting cheaper, too. almond prices in california dropped significantly in the past few months. a farmer who can sell a pound of almonds for nearly $5 last summer is getting as little as $3.10. farmers say a town downturn was inevitab inevitable. the cdc could clear an end to the chipotle e. coli outbreak as soon as today. the "wall street journal" says investigators have not been able to pinpoint the ingredient responsible for the contamination. chipotle sales and stock price have been slipping since news of the outbreak began surfacing in the pacific northwest in late october. more kids are doing yoga these days even at schools. fitness and education experts

say yoga can help busy kids have time for reflection and focus. regular yoga can help kids balance, gives them flexibility and increases awareness. from the nasdaq, i'm jane king, here's to your health. time for ask finney. answering questions sent in by facebook, twitter and e-mail. first question asked via facebook, is it true, you have to replace your car seat after any accident? >> no. that's going a little overboard. here's what the recommendation is from the national highway traffic safety administration. if you're in a really bad accident or even a medium accident you should totally replace the seat. but if you're in the kind of accident where the airbags don't deploy, the car was hit on the opposite side from where the child was sitting and you're able to drive the car away, generally your car seat is okay. you should still inspect it. make sure it's strong, make sure it's sturdy but you should be fine. >> bob harren of coursasked is

it to buy the travel insurance airlines offer when you purchase a ticket. >> i have a problem with it, here's why. i don't like it for a traveler to buy insurance from the travel provider. if the travel provider goes out of business, so does your insurance company. you want travel insurance from a different company. also a lot of that insurance you're buying, that you're calling travel insurance is ticket insurance. not covering anything else. just the ticket. you really need to compare prices and take a look at it and say, look, if the airline goes under, not going to have coverage. so is it a good enough deal for that? >> okay. earnest r. e-mails, how does one go about finding a contractor r company for home repairs? >> it's tough. word of mouth is the best thing yaw can do. talk to friends. go on yelp. check it out. after you do all of that, go to the contractor state licensing board, make sure they indeed are a licensed company. if they're not licensed, you don't want anything to do with them whatsoever.

for $150 a night on home away you can stay in and book today. we have places that rent for there are 10,000 a night for that weekend. >> reporter: home away is the world's largest marketplace for renting rooms. >> you think about the combination of the 50th super bowl in the bay area, and a brand new stadium. beyonce and cold play doing the music. i don't think the stars could align for more epic event than that. >> reporter: that's translating into epic demand for home rentals. >> this is our formal living room. >> reporter: especially in the south bay. >> i don't have to rent it out but it's well worth it for someone if they're going to really do it right and do the super bowl right. this is the place to stay. >> reporter: she's hoping to rent her four-bedroom home near levi's stadium for $20,000 a night with a four-night minimum. she's already getting calls and if she does rent the house, she knows what she'll do with the money. >> our daughter's getting married in may. so to a wonderful young man and we would love to rent the house

m melendez is done. >> they can add or delete before taking it to the board. now san francisco would not be the first in the nation in 2014. oakland unified passed it. it is now offered to middle school students through their health centers and soon to all their middle schools. san francisco unified said a recent survey revealed 5% of their students in middle school say they have had sex. if you doubt that someone that young could be sexually active, ask the director of the third street youth center and clinic in san francisco who says their average client is 14. >> so if 14 is the average, there are some who are older, but there are also some who are younger. >> reporter: that's why the school district wants to bring its wellness program to the more than 10,000 students in middle school and, yes, that would include offering condoms under the supervision of a counselor. the district says it's worked at the high school level. >> we believe that
